WESTERN RAILWAY’S AIR CONDITIONED LOCAL TRAIN SERVICES TO NOW RUN ON WEEKENDS TOO
Looking at the great potential for the AC local and in view of public demand, W. Rly has decided to run the AC local train services now on weekends too w.e.f 14th September 2019 The first Air Conditioned suburban train of India had made its maiden run on 25th December. 2017. Since then it has been receiving very good response from Mumbaikars.
According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar – Chief Public Relations Officer of W Rly, the AC local initially had stoppages at major stations i.e. Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Bhayander & Vasai Road. Subsequently, on its popularity, the AC local was provided with additional halts at Marine Lines, Charni Rd, Grant Rd, Dahisar, Mira Rd. Naigaon & Nallasopara stations in both directions w.e.f 1st November, 2018. With the introduction of these additional halts, the commuters have shown greater patronage for the AC locals with the sale of tickets increasing gradually. It is worthwhile to know that in the year 2018-19, India’s first AC Local train has had a total earning of almost Rs 19 crore and the services of this train are getting very good response from commuters. In this financial year upto August 2019, almost 23 lakh passengers patronized the AC local thereby garnering a revenue of Rs 9.61 crore in this period. The AC local is presently running from Monday to Friday, on Churchgate – Virar section of Western Railway. On public demand it has now been decided to operate the AC locals on weekends also, i.e on Saturdays as well as Sundays w.e.f 14th September 2019. The AC local services on weekends will be running at the same time schedule as on week days. Passengers, who generally are not regular travelers, can now avail of this facility. Hence, the AC local will run between Churchgate – Virar on all days of the week.
