SCR To Observe “International Level Crossing Awareness Day” on 11th June 2020

‘International Union of Railways’ has decided to observe 11th June, 2020 as International Level Crossing Awareness Day”. As part of it, Indian Railways is also participating in the global campaign to sensitize road users to increase safety at unmanned level crossings. The International Level Crossing Awareness Day focuses on educational measures and the promotion of safe behavior at and around level crossings.

Indian Railways in general and South Central Railway in particular has been giving continuous importance towards creating awareness among the users along the level crossing gates. Further, continuous importance is given to rationalize the level crossing gates over the network so as to enhance safety. As part of it. South Central Railway was among the first zones to eliminate all the Un-Manned Level Crossing (UMLCs) gates across its entire network by October 2018. In addition, focus is being given towards the elimination of the manned level crossing gates on a mission-mode as well.

At present, there are a total 1411 manned level crossings over South Central Railway. During the Financial year 2019-20, a total of 127 Manned level crossings have been removed by construction of LHS/ROB/RUBs. Even during the current financial year, 04 Manned level crossings have been replaced inspite of the lockdown in the wake of COVID-19

Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manger advised the officers and staff to take all necessary awareness measures to alert road users at Manned Level Crossing Gates duly following all necessary precautions due to COVID-19. He called upon the Divisional Officials to ensure 100 % implementation of putting up caution/ signage boards with statutory warning indicating road users on mandatory precautions to be observed when the Railway Gate is kept closed for approaching train. He also advised officials to ensure proper lighting arrangements, remove encroachments adjacent to Level Crossing Gates which are hampering the vision of road users.

He also stressed upon removal of Manned Level Crossing Gates in phased manner by providing alternative arrangements such as construction of Limited Height Subways (LHS); Road Under Bridges (RUBs) and Road Over Bridges (ROBs) with the co-operation and participation of State Governments.

He also solicited the co-operation from all the Road Vehicle Owners / Users in following all the safety procedures while crossing the level crossing gates like Stopping and looking out for train in both directions before crossing the track at Level Crossings.
