WESTERN RAILWAY: A PIONEER IN DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION THROUGH SUCCESSFULL IMPLEMENTATION OF USERS DEPOT MODULE
WR has successfully implemented Users Depot Module to 100% extent in Supply Chain Management.
Transactions worth Rs.237 Cr have been performed by WR which is highest in IR.
In a major boost to ‘Digital India’ initiative, Western Railway has completed 100% implementation of Users Depot Module (UDM) in all the departments. This module has been implemented with an aim to complete the digitization of supply chain management upto the consignee end and make the existing Indian Railways e-procurement System (IREPS) more informative, useful and transparent. This major accomplishment has been achieved in the backdrop of ongoing COVID pandemic, wherein, the lockdown period was fruitfully utilized & the adversity was turned into an opportunity, under the aegis & able guidance of Shri Alok Kansal – General Manager of WR.
According to a press release issued by Shri Sumit Thakur – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, Users Depot Module (UDM)enables the users of all railway departments to create Ledgers, Demands and to make online payments to suppliers through Integrated Payroll and Accounting System (IPAS) module. W. Rly completed 100% implementation of Users Depot Module (UDM) in all the departments, with the on boarding of 886 end users on the newly developed application for end users of materials. UDM is not only helpful in dynamic review of Average Annual Consumptions (AAC) but also in saving public funds by avoiding wastages by way of correct analysis of demands forecasting and increased transparency in the system. This remodeled approach also allows the users to obtain material from any Railway unit that has spare stocks. The application is also useful for the Purchase Officers as it helps them make an informed decision regarding quantities to be procured precisely, saving valuable financial resources for the railways. Additionally, previously it was difficult to obtain the consumption of materials and the stock availability with the end user. But implementation of User Depot Module (UDM) in Railways workshops, maintenance sheds, and manufacturing units has bridged this gap and all the aforementioned information about the material availability is available throughout the Railways. This allows the users to obtain material from any Railway unit which has adequate stock. As a result of this module, WR has recorded a transaction of Rs.237 Cr, till now.
Shri Thakur further informed that Western Railway realized the limitations of the previous system and suggested for an end-to-end digital platform to the Railway Board for improving the information availability and automating many labour intensive manual processes, thus facilitating decision making at different managerial stages. Railway Board agreed to the suggestions put forth by Western Railway and nominated WR in May, 2020 for conducting the trial of Beta version of UDM in the nominated depots in the first phase before implementation across all over the Indian Railways. Principal Chief Materials Manager of W. Rly was nominated as nodal officer for coordinating with all the departments of WR for the implementation of UDM. Finally, this module was given go ahead for implementation in all railways in Sept, 2020 by Railway Board after the successful trial implementation by WR.
