RAILWAY MINISTER INAUGURATES PHASE-I OF EAST-WEST METRO, DREAM PROJECT STARTS ROLLING

East-West Metro, the Dream Project of the “City of Joy” became a reality.

Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry inaugurated the Phase-I of East-West Metro on 13th February 2020. Both Shri Goyal and Shri Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change flagged off the maiden run in a function at Salt Lake Sector-V station. In his address, Shri Goyal announced that within the next three to four months, services of East-West Metro will be extended upto Phoolbagan and the people of Kolkata will be immensely benefited during the coming Durga Puja.

He also expressed hope that within the next two years, the entire stretch from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector-V will be completed. Central Government is determined to complete all the ongoing Metro projects of Kolkata within the shortest possible time. He has further reassured that if land is made available and encroachments are removed then funds won’t be a constraint for implementing any Railway project.

Shri Babul Supriyo expressed his hope that in the coming days the East-West Metro will be popular and commuters will enjoy East-West Metro ride. He also thanked the ground level workers for making this project a reality.

Shri Manoj Joshi, General Manager, Metro Railway, Shri Suneet Sharma, General Manager, Eastern Railway, Shri Sanjoy Kumar Mohanty, General Manager, South Eastern Railway, Shri Manas Sarkar, Managing Director, KMRCL and Mesayuki Taga, Consul General of Japan were also present during this programme.

At present, the journey of East-West Metro will be 5.3 kms from Salt Lake Sector-V to Salt Lake Stadium covering six (06) stations namely Sector-V, Karunamayee, Central Park, City Center, Bengal Chemical and Salt Lake Stadium.

Total length of this project is 16.5 kms. which will connect Howrah on the West bank of the river Hooghly with Salt Lake City on its East bank.

Shri Goyal and Shri Babul Supriyo also took a ride from Salt Lake Sector-V to City Centre on the first Metro.

Commercial Services: -Commercial Service in this section will commence from 14th February, 2020 (14.02.2020). At present, 74 services (37 UP + 37 DN) will run on Weekdays and Saturdays. However, 50 services (25 UP + 25 DN) will run on Sundays.

Time Schedule: – The first and the last service in this route will start at 08:00 hrs. and 20:00 hrs. respectively from both ends i.e. Salt Lake Sector-V and Salt Lake Stadium on Weekdays and Saturdays.

However, on Sundays, the first and the last service will commence at 12:00 hrs. and 20:00 hrs. from the both ends.

Ticketing System: – AFC-PC Gate, Smart Card and Smart Token as in the North-South Metro.

SPECIAL FEATURES FOR THE FIRST TIME

  • Platform Screen Doors at all stations.
  • Communication Based Train Control System (CBTC) is the latest state-of-the-art signalling system which will ensure the safe passage of trains and optimizes the line capacity.
  • Toilets and designated seating arrangements for Divyang.
  • Sockets for Mobile and Laptop chargers inside each coach.
  • Ramps for emergency evacuation from all coaches.
  • Emergency announcements from Operation Control Centre will be heard inside the coach.

SAFETY AND SECURITY MEASURES:

  • CCTV cameras inside and outside the coaches for safety of passengers with remote real time monitoring from Operation Control Centre (OCC) as well as from the Motorman’s cab.
  • One fire extinguisher is kept in each coach for use during any onboard fire emergency.
  • Heat/smoke and toxicity detectors inside each coach as part of fire detection system.
  • Integrated Station Management System has been provided with fire alert and emergency activation facilities.
  • Baggage Scanners and Door Frame Metal Detectors at all stations.
  • Security Monitoring Room on each platform.
